Organisation

The school has 116 children on roll and they are divided into four mixed-ability classes.

  • Little Acorns Reception and Year 1 (Infants): 23 children
  • Horse Chestnuts Year 1 and Year 2 (Infants): 27 children
  • Beeches Year 3 and Year 4 (Juniors): 33 children
  • Sweet Chestnuts Year 5 and Year 6 (Juniors): 33 children

By maintaining a small number of children in the Reception/Year 1 class and a high ratio of staff to children we aim to ensure the best possible start for our children in the first year of school.

Each class is named after a tree the class has adopted in Nymans National Trust Gardens in the village. The children pay regular visits to their trees, to observe the seasonal changes. Most of the time, the children are taught by their class teacher, but there are other arrangements in place when the teachers have their non-contact time for planning. At this time each class is taught by our specialist music teacher and our specialist PE teacher.

In the juniors, we have at least two Teaching Assistants attached to each class, each with particular strengths and areas of expertise, and they frequently teach small groups under the direction of the class teacher. We work hard to ensure that the needs of every individual are met.

Our Special Needs teacher works with groups and individuals who are experiencing particular difficulties. There is a rich programme of special extension activities our Very Able children.

The children are divided into four houses which take their names from the four estates adjoining the school: Nymans, Hyde, High Beeches and Leonardslee. The children earn bonus points for their house, and the members of the winning house enjoy a reward each term. Children also win points for their house on Sports Day.
